More about entry from our guide

The word "Grammar" in the name can mislead. KGS is a fee-paying independent school, so it has no catchment area and is not part of any council 11+ test. It writes and marks its own entrance papers. It is also not a member of the London 11+ Consortium, so its timetable is its own.

There are two usual ways in: the First Year at 11+ and the Sixth Form at 16+. Now and then a place comes up in Years 8 to 10. These are filled by entrance tests in the spring term, so ask the admissions team if you are thinking of a move part way through.

Please don't worry if you only found the school now. Each year has a fresh timetable. If your child is in Year 5, the next round is the one to plan for. The school has not yet set its dates for that round, and we will add them here as soon as it does.

The school has 150Kingston Grammar School: PlacesChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: There are approximately 150 places available.View the official source places in the First Year, and many more children apply than there are places. Children sit the exam while they are in Year 6. Once a child is registered, the school emails sample papers, which is a good way to see the style of the questions.

The 11+ is made up of:

  • the school's own English paperKingston Grammar School: Own englishChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: The entrance assessments consist of two papers: English (comprehension and creative writing), which lasts for 50 minutes, and Mathematics, also lasting 50 minutes.View the official source, with a comprehension and the school's own creative writing taskKingston Grammar School: Own creative writingChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: The entrance assessments consist of two papers: English (comprehension and creative writing), which lasts for 50 minutes, and Mathematics, also lasting 50 minutes.View the official source

The written papers. "Own papers" means the school's teachers set them, rather than an outside test company. KGS pitches them at what a child in Year 6 should know from the National Curriculum in English and maths. It does not recommend tutoring for them. If your child needs extra time or a laptop, ask on the registration form. You will need a report from a specialist teacher or educational psychologist by the deadline.

The school report. Before the exam, KGS writes to your child's head teacher for a confidential report. Parents also upload the child's latest school report.

The interview. Children who do well in the papers are invited back on 5 January 2027Kingston Grammar School: Interview date (2027)Checked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: Interviews – Tuesday 5 JanuaryView the official source. KGS describes it as a relaxed chat about a child's interests and hobbies. It asks families not to coach for it, because it wants to meet the real child.

Offers. The school looks at the papers, interview, report and any scholarship work together. Offers are emailed on 12 February 2027Kingston Grammar School: Offer date (2027)Checked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: Offers emailed – Friday 12 FebruaryView the official source. What sets this route apart is that there is no entrance exam. The school says it wants to keep stress down while students are busy with their GCSEs. Instead, it looks at:

  • a reference from the current schoolKingston Grammar School: ReferenceChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: Confidential school reference to include predicted GCSE gradesView the official source, which must include predicted GCSE grades
  • a personal statement, sent in by the registration deadline

  • an interviewKingston Grammar School: InterviewChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: Interview (if invited following evaluation of the two elements above)View the official source, if the first stage goes well

The personal statement is the student's chance to show who they are beyond their grades. Interviews are on 17 November 2026Kingston Grammar School: Interview date (2027)Checked 10 Oct 2026 against Kingston Grammar School. The source says: Interviews – Tuesday 17 NovemberView the official source, with a member of the Sixth Form team. The talk looks ahead, at curiosity and potential, more than at what a student already knows. The exact grade rules are set out on the school's sixth form page.

Any offer depends on GCSE results, and the student calls the school on results day to confirm. On when 16+ offers go out, the school's published information differs; we have asked it to confirm. At 11+ the awards are for art, music and sport, and each has its own assessment on top of the entrance exam. Tick the box on the registration form and the scholarship form appears in your online checklist. For art, children send a digital folder first, and those picked go on to a practical workshop and a talk about their work. For music, a short video comes first, then an audition with sight-reading, aural tests and a chat with the Director of Music. Sport starts with a general day on movement, coordination and teamwork, then a second round for the sports the school plays.

In the Sixth Form, the academic award is made at the Head Master's choice for very strong GCSE results. For art, design and technology, or drama, the student must take that subject at A level. Every scholar still has to meet the school's academic standard.
