About these dates
Which dates matter most?
For a typical grammar school area, these are the dates to put in your calendar:
- Registration opens and closes. Often in Year 5, months before the test. Missing it is the hardest mistake to undo.
- Access arrangements deadline, if your child needs adjustments. Often earlier than registration closes.
- Test day, and any practice or familiarisation session.
- Results day, usually in October for a September test.
- The application deadline: 31 OctoberSchool place applications close (common application form, CAF)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against GOV.UK.The source says:

How do you read the dates on our pages?
- Entry year. "2027 entry" means children starting secondary school in September 2027, who are in Year 6 now. "2028 entry" is today's Year 5. Always check you are looking at the right column.
- Verified dates. A date with a "verified" stamp has been checked twice against the official source on the date shown.
- Approximate dates. Some councils first publish an early guide, such as "early September". We show these words exactly, and replace them with the exact date when it is published.
- To be confirmed. Official sources disagree, or our checks didn't match. We are asking the source.
- Not yet published. The area hasn't announced it yet. We never show last year's date in its place.
Why can the same event have different dates?
Because areas and schools differ. Even within one area, children at different schools may sit on different days, and out-of-area children may have a separate session. Application deadlines can also differ slightly between councils, or when 31 OctoberSchool place applications close (common application form, CAF)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against GOV.UK.The source says: You must apply for a secondary school place by 31 October.
View the official source falls at a weekend. The official letter or email you receive always takes priority over any general list, including ours.
How can you keep track?
- Add your area's dates to your phone with our key dates calendar.
- Follow a school to be told when a date changes or a new one is published.
- Bookmark your area's dates page and check it at the start of each term.

Sources
National dates come from GOV.UK school admissions guidance, the School Admissions Code 2021 and the School Admission Appeals Code 2022. Area dates come from each area's verified record (here, The Bucks Grammar Schools and Buckinghamshire Council), and Northern Ireland and independent school dates from SEAG, the ISEB and the London 11+ Consortium, all archived on 9 October 2026.
ExamKind is independent and is not connected with any test provider, school or council. How we make our content.
How it works
Each row is one test area, or one school that runs its own test, for one entry year. We compare every date with today: dates that have passed are marked done and change tense, and the first date still ahead is marked next.
A day count appears only for your own deadlines, such as test registration and school place applications. It never appears for test days, results or offers.
Where the information comes from
Dates come from council, consortium and school admissions pages and published timelines. We save a copy of each source and check every date twice. Each area's calendar feed has the same checked dates.
The school place deadline and National Offer Day are set nationally, but councils publish their own closing times, so we show each council's wording.
What this cannot tell you
Dates can change. Always confirm with the council or school before a deadline, especially for late applications, moving house or illness on test day.
When a source has only said “early May” or “October”, the date is marked expected. We never show last year's dates as this year's.
