Barnet 11+: how entry works at each grammar school

Each school runs its own test, so a child applying to more than one school sits more than one test.

QE tests English and maths only. Boys are given a morning or afternoon session by the school, and the standardised English and maths scores are combined into one overall score.

HBS uses Round 1 to choose who goes through. There is no Barnet-wide pass mark. Each school marks on its own scale and decides places by its own rules:

In short: at QE a boy must reach the Governors' standard and then rank high enough; at St Michael's, rank counts within each faith and care criterion; at HBS the final ranking rules are in the policy we could not check.

We could not confirm the lowest score that won a place at any of the schools. QE refers families to its admissions information pages for these figures; the other schools' pages we checked show none. QE and HBS do publish how far their waiting lists moved:

Past results are a guide, not a promise: they change with the number and strength of applicants each year.

The pupil premium is extra funding schools receive for children who get, or recently got, free school meals, and for children who are or were in care. The Barnet schools treat it very differently:

• HBS: any pupil premium priority is set out in its admissions policy, which we could not check. Read the policy before applying.
• St Michael's: Criterion 2: up to 32 places (25% of PAN) for Pupil Premium girls who also meet the Catholic practice requirement and rank in the top 175; allotted by test rank if more than 32. Fallback criterion e. covers other PP girls only if fewer than 175 Catholic applicants. If your child is eligible, tell the school when you apply and ask the primary school for the evidence each school asks for.

Appeals take time and can be hard on the whole family. Waiting lists are a separate route and you can use both. A realistic second choice on your council form is your safety net.
