GL Assessment 11+
By ExamKind Editorial TeamFacts checked 19 October 2026Last reviewed 19 October 2026
In short
GL Assessment writes the 11+ for many grammar school areas in England, and sets and marks Northern Ireland's SEAG test. GL says most UK grammar schools use its tests. There is no single "GL 11+", though: each area chooses its own mix of subjects, papers and timings. Most GL tests are multiple choice, and GL publishes free familiarisation papers you can print at home.

What is a GL 11+ test like?
Because each area commissions its own version, details differ. GL itself warns that 11+ tests vary from area to area, so a local test’s timings, topics and number of questions may differ from GL’s own materialsGL Assessment: tests vary by areaChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School. The source says: 11+ tests vary from area to area so please be aware that the exact timings, the combination of topics covered (for example, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English) and the number of questions in your local 11+ test may differ from those in our familiarisation and practice materials.

Is there a GL pass mark?

How can you prepare calmly for a GL test?
- Check your area's exact format first. Subjects, timings and weightings vary.
- Build the basics: wide reading, vocabulary, times tables and confident arithmetic help in every GL area.
- Get familiar with the answer sheet. Practise marking answers neatly in the right box.
- Practise timing gently, later on. Short timed sections are more useful in the last months than long papers early.
- Use the free familiarisation papers before deciding whether you need anything else.
If you are deciding how much help to get, our guides on preparing without a tutor and when to start may help.
