How places are given

Passing the test is the first step, not a place

Children sit the Redbridge 11+ test. Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place: each school then gives places by its own rules.

You apply for school places through your home council, on its Common Application Form (CAF), by its deadline. Name the schools in your real order of preference: councils look at every preference at the same time.

More about the schools from our guide

The grammar schools in Redbridge are both community schools, so the council is the admission authority for each. They share one catchment area: 11+ Common Catchment Area shared by Ilford County High and Woodford County High (map on Redbridge maps: Education > 11+ Common Catchment Area); applicants outside it are considered only after all requests from within it have been metRedbridge 2027 entry: CatchmentChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: The schools have a Common Catchment Area. Follow the link: https://my.redbridge.gov.uk/map, click on Map category ‘Education’, then select from 11+ Common Catchment Area. If parents live outside the Common Catchment Area, consideration for a place at one of these schools will be given after all the requests from those within the Common Catchment Area have been met.View the official source.

Neither school gives priority to siblings or to children of staff. Each school page covers its tie-break, waiting list and past figures.

  • You can apply for schools in another council's area. You still apply through your own home council, on its form.
  • Each area runs its own test, with its own registration and dates. If you like schools in two areas, check both registration deadlines.
  • Schools often give priority to children living nearby or in a catchment area, so check each school's rules before you rely on it.

How the test works

The Redbridge 11 plus exam format is simple to describe: one sitting, two papers, no second stage. The London Borough of RedbridgeRedbridge: Test run byChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Woodford County High School. The source says: Entry is via a voluntary 11+ test, which is administered by the London Borough of Redbridge Education Authority and taken in the Autumn of Year 6.View the official source runs it for both schools, and GL AssessmentRedbridge 11+ test: Provider by entry year (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: The 11 plus test is provided by GL Assessment, the UK's leading provider of these entrance exams.View the official source provides it.

  • Papers: English and Verbal Reasoning; Mathematics and Non-Verbal ReasoningRedbridge 2027 entry: PapersChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: The 11 Plus test will consist of two papers: English and Verbal Reasoning Mathematics and Non-Verbal ReasoningView the official source.
  • Scoring: Ranking uses a "total standardised score" across the two papers; subject weightings and whether the score is age-standardised are not statedIlford County High School: Score composition (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: c. other children living in the Common Catchment Area, ranked according to the total standardised score in overall order of merit;View the official source.
  • Registering: Online through a My Redbridge account (council 11 plus registration portal); special arrangements requested at registration with the primary school care planRedbridge 2027 entry: Registration routeChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: If you already have an account, you can go straight to the portal to register for the 11 plus test.View the official source.
  • Late or missed tests: Late testing only for on-time registrants with a doctor’s certificate or proof why the child could not sit (e.g. religious observance); no testing for those who did not register by the deadline; no alternative date if the child misses it for another school’s test on the same dayIlford County High School 2027 entry: Late testingChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: In respect of those who register on-time but are unable to take the tests on the published date, late testing will be arranged only on the provision of a doctor’s certificate or proof of why the child could not sit on the original dates provided i.e. religious observance.View the official source.

Because the same test serves both schools, boys and girls are ranked separately but by the same kind of score. Our GL Assessment page describes the provider's question styles.

Scores and results explained

The rule for 2027 entry: Minimum threshold score of 104; qualifying candidates ranked by total standardised score in overall order of merit within the oversubscription criteria (looked after, 45 pupil premium places, Common Catchment Area, then outside it)Redbridge 2027 entry: Qualifying ruleChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: There will be a “minimum threshold score” of 104 for all applicants. No one scoring lower than 104 will be added to the ranked list or waiting list.View the official source.

So the minimum score makes a child eligible, and then the ranking decides. In each recent year, fewer than half of the children who sat the test reached the minimum, and many more reached it than there were places.

For 2025 and 2026 entry, the council's tables print the same number for children registered and children who sat.

Last offered scores. Each year the council publishes the total score of the last on-time child offered a place from inside the catchment on National Offer Day. Woodford's last offered score has been higher than Ilford County High's in every year shown. These figures are a guide, not a promise.

Pupil premium and disadvantaged places

Pupil premium is extra funding schools receive for children who have had free school meals or have been in care. In Redbridge, the council's rules set aside a share of grammar places for these children, as long as they reach the minimum score. They are then ranked by score among themselves.

Some cells show as awaiting confirmation because official documents disagree. The council and Woodford's website describe Woodford's pupil premium places differently, including whether girls must live in the catchment. Documents also differ on the date when pupil premium eligibility is checked. If this applies to your child, ask the council's admissions team before the application deadline.

Reviews and appeals

This section is general information, not legal advice. Deadlines are strict, so check the council's own guidance.

No review stage. No formal review panel: parents unhappy with the selection outcome should discuss it with their primary headteacher; the decision can be challenged through the statutory appeal processRedbridge 2027 entry: Review processChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Redbridge. The source says: If a parent is not satisfied with the outcome of the optional selection procedure, they should discuss the matter with the head of their child's primary school.
