How places are given

Passing the test is the first step, not a place

Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place: each school then gives places by its own rules.

You apply for school places through your home council, on its Common Application Form (CAF), by its deadline. Name the schools in your real order of preference: councils look at every preference at the same time.

More about the schools from our guide

Both of Bromley's grammar schools are in Orpington. Each school page has its full rules, dates and figures.

  • St. Olave's has no catchment area and gives no priority to brothers of current pupils. It also has a small number of chorister places: Up to 4 Wakeham Choristership places in addition to PAN 124; unfilled chorister places are offered via the local authority to reach a cohort of 128.St. Olave's Grammar School: Special places (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Olave's Grammar School. The source says: The PAN (published admission number) is 124 plus up to 4 places for students via our Wakeham Choristership scheme. If we do not fill all 4 chorister places, we would offer the remaining places out via the local authority in order to reach a final cohort of 128 students.View the official source

  • You can apply for schools in another council's area. You still apply through your own home council, on its form.
  • Each area runs its own test, with its own registration and dates. If you like schools in two areas, check both registration deadlines.
  • Schools often give priority to children living nearby or in a catchment area, so check each school's rules before you rely on it.

How the test works

Each Bromley grammar school runs its own entrance test, with its own form, papers and marking. The council co-ordinates applications and offers but does not run either test. Side by side:

St. Olave's uses Stage 1 as a filter. How the two stages are weighted is set out in the school's admissions policy.

Newstead Wood uses reasoning papers only. How it scores them: Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers; scores age adjusted and ranked on the total score; NVR score breaks ties. Weights not stated.Newstead Wood School: Score composition (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Newstead Wood School. The source says: The scores achieved in the tests will be age adjusted and placed in rank order based on the total score achieved.View the official source

The two tests ask quite different things. A boy aiming for St. Olave's needs to be ready for English and maths as well as reasoning, while Newstead Wood tests reasoning alone. If your child is also sitting tests for schools in neighbouring areas, check each one's papers separately. Our school-set 11+ page explains how schools that write their own tests tend to work.

Scores and results explained

Neither Bromley school uses a borough pass mark. Each has its own way of turning a test result into an offer.

  • St. Olave's does not publish a pass mark or a lowest score offered. Reaching Stage 2 means a boy has met its minimum standard; after that, places go in final rank order.
  • Newstead Wood has a published "required standard" and ranks girls above it by total score, with priority groups. Its rule for 2027 entry: Required standard is a score of 210 unless that is not sufficient to meet the PAN after completion of the admissions process, in which case the school determines a standard sufficient to meet PAN. Only girls at or above the required standard may be admitted; places are then allocated by the selection criteria in rank order of total score.Newstead Wood School: Qualifying rule (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Newstead Wood School. The source says: The required standard will be a score of 210 marks unless this is not sufficient to meet the PAN of the School after completion of the admissions process.View the official source

Scores at Newstead Wood are age adjusted: a girl's mark is compared with others of the same age, which helps children born late in the school year.

The Newstead Wood figure is one past year's cut-off. It is a guide, not a promise: next year's depends on how that year's girls score. At both schools, far more children sit the test than there are places, so most do not get one. That is no reflection on a child's ability, and it is why a realistic second choice matters.

Across all Bromley secondary schools, not just the grammars, the council reports: Bromley families offered a place at one of their named preferences (September 2026 admissions, all secondary): 93%; Bromley families who could not be offered a named preference and were allocated an alternative school: 7%Bromley 2026 entry: OtherChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Bromley. The source says: For admission in September 2026 7% of ... alternative school. 93% were offered aView the official source. Pupil premium and disadvantaged places

Pupil premium is extra funding schools receive for children who get, or recently got, free school meals. Both Bromley grammar schools give these children some help, in different ways:

  • St. Olave's: Up to 10 Year 7 places each year. Applicants must pass the Stage 1 SET and sit Stage 2; pupil premium applicants are ranked separately from the main pool.St. Olave's Grammar School: Pp priority (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Olave's Grammar School. The source says: Each year, St. Olave's offers up to 10 Year 7 places for boys who are in receipt of pupil premium (or have been at any point during the 6 years prior to applying to take our entrance test) - subject to proof of eligibility being provided to the School. [...] any who qualify under pupil premium will be entered into a separate ranking to the main pool of applicants.View the official source
  • Newstead Wood: Priority (after looked after children, above all other applicants) for girls living within the 9-mile radius who receive Pupil Premium or Service Premium and score at or above the required standard. No fixed number of places; no lower score.Newstead Wood School: Pp priority (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Newstead Wood School. The source says: 3.2.2 Girls whose permanent place of residence is within a 9-mile radius of the school who are in receipt of Pupil Premium or Service Premium**, at the time ofView the official source Service premium covers children from armed forces families.

In both cases the school needs proof of eligibility, sent with the registration form. If you think your child may qualify, check each school's form carefully when registration opens.

Reviews and appeals

General information, not legal advice. Appeal deadlines are strict, so follow the school's own instructions.

If a Bromley grammar school refuses a place, you can appeal to an independent panel for that school. Bromley sets out two kinds of grammar school appeal: Allocation appeals (assessed as grammar but refused under oversubscription criteria) and assessment appeals (assessed as non-grammar).Bromley: Grammar appeal typesChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Bromley. The source says: Allocation appeals - This is where your child has been assessed as grammar but has been refused a place at the school when the oversubscription criteria have been applied.View the official source

  • St. Olave's: Independent appeal panel; appeals are lodged with the independent clerk at Education Appeals (online form linked from the school Appeals page), not with the school.St. Olave's Grammar School: Appeals route (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Olave's Grammar School. The source says: All parents/carers have the right to appeal to an independent appeal panel should their son not be offered a place on National Offer Day. Please see the Appeals page for further details.View the official source
  • Newstead Wood: Appeal to the Admission Appeals Panel via the appeal form on the school website, available from National Offer Day; appeals heard online by an independent panel (clerk: Education Appeals).Newstead Wood School: Appeals route (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Newstead Wood School. The source says: Parents/carers whose daughters are unsuccessful in obtaining a place can appeal to the Admission Appeals Panel. Neither school has published its 2027-entry appeal deadline yet. Appeals open after National Offer Day (1 March 2027Bromley 2027 entry: National Offer DayChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Bromley. The source says: The national offer date for on-time secondary applications is 1 March 2027View the official source).

Please go in with realistic expectations. The council's 2026 figures for each school:

  • St. Olave's: Applications naming the school received via co-ordinated admissions (Bromley booklet, 2026 admissions): 473; Appeals heard 2026: 12; Appeals upheld 2026: 0; Last distance 2026/2025/2024: Places offered on Test ScoreSt. Olave's Grammar School 2026 entry: OtherChecked 9 Oct 2026 against London Borough of Bromley. The source says: Appeals 2026 ... No appeal heard at either school for 2026 entry was upheld. Waiting lists are the other route: if you ranked a grammar school above the school you are offered, your child can stay on its list (each school page explains who is included), and the council reallocates places that come free during the waiting-list period shown in the dates table.
