One school in the area works differently. Chelmsford County High School for Girls is not a CSSE member and ran its own test before the CSSE one; see below.
How places are given
Passing the test is the first step, not a place
Children sit the CSSE 11+ examination, written by the CSSE's own 11+ examination. A score of 303 or more means a child can be considered for a selective place. Each school then gives places using its own admission rules, so qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.
You apply for school places through your home council, on its Common Application Form (CAF), by its deadline. Name the schools in your real order of preference: councils look at every preference at the same time.

More about the schools from our guide
Each school sets and numbers its own admission rules, so the same rule number can mean different things at different schools. Each school page explains its own rules, priority area and past outcomes.
Chelmsford County High School for Girls is a grammar school in Essex too, but it is not in this table because it does not use the CSSE test. See the separate section.

- You can apply for schools in another council's area. You still apply through your own home council, on its form.
- Each area runs its own test, with its own registration and dates. If you like schools in two areas, check both registration deadlines.
- Schools often give priority to children living nearby or in a catchment area, so check each school's rules before you rely on it.

How scores are standardised and combined
Raw marks are not compared directly. CSSE turns each paper's raw mark into a standardised score, which shows how a child did compared with everyone who sat that paper. It then looks at results by date of birth and, where the data shows younger children are at a disadvantage, adds a small age adjustment. The two papers count equally and are combined into one total.
- CSSE's own summary: Raw scores standardised and analysed by date of birth to decide whether a statistical age adjustment is applied; formula published on the CSSE website after resultsCSSE 11+ examination (English and Mathematics): StandardisationChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE).The source says:
The formula for calculating the standardised score will be published on the CSSE website shortly after the results are despatched.
View the official source - The method used last year (2026 entry, a past year): Each paper standardised to mean 100, SD 15; total = 1.5 x [(std Maths + days younger x Maths age adj) + (std English + days younger x English age adj)]; age adjustment applied to both papers (English 0.016617024, Maths 0.00894304)Essex and Southend (CSSE): Standardisation method2026 entryChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE).The source says:
