How far offers reached

Each bar shows how far from Chelmsford County High School for Girls the last child offered a place lived, under the last admission rule the offers reached. Up to five years, on one scale.

Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.

A score of 92 or more in the CSSE 11+ examination (English and Mathematics) means your child can be considered. If more children qualify than there are places, the school gives places using its admission rules, in order. The figures below show how far those rules reached in past years. They are history, not a prediction: they change every year with who applies.

About these figures

CCHS publishes the score of the last girl offered a place each year, separately for girls inside and outside its priority area. It gives a one-point range rather than an exact score. Past years are a guide, not a promise.

Three things help when reading this table:

  • The figures up to 2023 come from the test CCHS used before FSCE, so they are not directly comparable with later years.
  • These are CCHS's own scores, on a different scale from the CSSE totals used by other Essex and Southend grammar schools.
  • For recent years, the school's notes give the date each figure was correct, which is shortly after National Offer Day. Places that come free later are offered from the ranked list.

CCHS is not a member of the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE), so a CSSE score cannot be used here, and the CCHS test does not count for the CSSE schools. The school runs its own registration and its own test day, and the test is written by an outside provider.

  • Background: CCHS has used the FSCE-provided entrance test since September 2023 (2024 entry onward)Chelmsford County High School for Girls: Fsce sinceChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: Since September 2023, we have been using a new CCHS Entrance Test, provided by our FSCE partners.View the official source
  • What it can cover: Any National Curriculum subject up to and including the Year 5 programme of study, plus creativityCCHS entrance test (FSCE): Curriculum basisChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: Reference to subjects: The Entrance Test may assess knowledge and skills from any National Curriculum subject taught up to and including the Year 5 programme of study:View the official source
  • The elements: a maths element, an English element and a creativity task. The school has not published the number of papers or their timings in a form we could check.
  • Answer format: mixedCCHS entrance test (FSCE): Answer formatChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: The Test includes multiple-choice and written-response questions.View the official source
  • Marking: All papers except Creativity computer-marked and age standardisedCCHS entrance test (FSCE): StandardisationChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: All papers, except the Creativity Task, are computer marked and age standardised.View the official source
  • How creativity is judged: Creativity task: written answer to a Creativity question, judged by a trained CCHS staff panel only for candidates meeting the qualifying standard on the other papersCCHS entrance test (FSCE): Writing taskChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: In the test, your child will be asked to provide a written answer to a Creativity question.View the official source
  • Preparation material: Free FSCE Familiarisation Guides (children / parents) on the school website; no past or practice papersCCHS entrance test (FSCE): Familiarisation materialsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: There are no ‘practice papers’, but a familiarisation paper will be made available on our website.View the official source

FSCE says the question types, subjects and format change from year to year, which is why there are no past papers. The familiarisation guides are the place to start if you want your daughter to know what the day will feel like.

How the eligible score works. There is no qualifying mark set in advance.

  • The rule in the admission policy: Must have registered for and sat the CCHS test and achieve an "eligible score" in each element; the eligible score is set each year by the Admissions Committee from cohort performance (Maths/English standardised rank order once a minimum Creativity standard is met)Chelmsford County High School for Girls: Qualifying rule (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: In order to be eligible for admission to the school, applicants must achieve an ‘eligible score’ in each element of the test.View the official source
  • How the committee sets it: No pre-defined pass mark; the Admissions Committee sets an eligible score each year from cohort performance (qualifying standard on marked papers, then minimum Creativity standard)CCHS entrance test (FSCE): Pass mark methodChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: The Admissions Committee will then meet to determine an eligible score and a rank order of girls who should be offered a place. This score will be determined based on the cohort’s performance each year.View the official source

In practice, a girl first needs to reach the standard on the computer-marked maths and English elements. Only then is her creativity answer judged. Girls who reach the standard in every element are eligible, and are then placed in order of their combined standardised score.
