How places are given

Passing the test is the first step, not a place

Each school then gives places using its own admission rules, so qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.

You apply for school places through your home council, on its Common Application Form (CAF), by its deadline. Name the schools in your real order of preference: councils look at every preference at the same time.

More about the schools from our guide

Both schools are academies that set their own admission rules. Neither gives priority to brothers or sisters.

  • Kendrick School draws from a designated area split into Priority Area 1 and Priority Area 2, decided by home postcode. After looked-after girls and eligible pupil-premium and service-premium girls, most places go by rank to girls from either priority area; the rest go to Priority Area 1 first, then Priority Area 2. Girls living outside the designated area come last.
  • Reading School fills its places in category order: priority places, sporting aptitude, boys at feeder primaries within a set radius, the priority Reading postcodes, the rest of the catchment area, then all other eligible boys. It also has weekly boarding places, which have their own policy.

Live near a border?

  • You can apply for schools in another council's area. You still apply through your own home council, on its form.
  • Each area runs its own test, with its own registration and dates. If you like schools in two areas, check both registration deadlines.
  • Schools often give priority to children living nearby or in a catchment area, so check each school's rules before you rely on it.

How the tests work

Not linked to Slough. Slough's grammar schools no longer share 11+ scores with Kendrick or Reading School, and neither Reading school uses the Slough test. If you are also looking at Slough, see our Slough 11+ guide.

Qualifying and eligible scores

Both schools rank children by score, but they use different words and different rules.

  • Kendrick's qualifying score. The policy says girls are ranked on the aggregate of their two age-standardised scores; a qualifying score (to two decimal places) is set for categories 3-6, and a score 5 points lower applies to looked-after, pupil-premium and service-premium girlsKendrick School: Qualifying rule (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Kendrick School. The source says: Applicants will be ranked according to their performance in the tests. A qualifying score will be determined (to two decimal places) for candidates in categories 3-6 of the oversubscription criteria below. A qualifying score of 5 points lower than this score will be applied for candidates in categories 1 and 2View the official source. The school sets this score each year, so there is no fixed mark to aim for.
  • Reading School's eligible score. The school uses an 'eligible score' set each year by the Governors' Admissions Committee; a boy must be of the standard in every element (no compensation between elements)Reading School: Qualifying rule (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Reading School. The source says: To be eligible, a candidate must be 'of the standard' in each of the elements of the entrance test. They may score highly on one area but if they perform poorly on another, they will not be classed as eligible.View the official source. In practice, a strong result in one element cannot make up for a weak one in another. Among boys who are eligible, places then go by category and by score.

We have not yet verified any past qualifying or eligible scores for either school, so we do not show any here. A score from one school's test cannot be used at the other.

Pupil premium

Both schools give extra room to children eligible for the pupil premium (usually those who get, or recently got, free school meals) and to service children, but each sets its own condition.

  • Kendrick: pupil premium and service premium girls in Priority Area 1 or 2 need a qualifying score 5 points lower and are offered a place even if outside the top 128Kendrick School: Pp priority (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Kendrick School. The source says: In Category 2 above, any such applicant, provided she has achieved the lower qualifying score and her permanent home address is within Priority Area 1 or 2 of the designated area of the school, will be offered a place even if she is not ranked in the top 128 places.View the official source. Kendrick also offers a free familiarisation programme for Year 5 girls on pupil premium, service premium or in care living in the designated area, plus an after-school club for Years 3-5Kendrick School: Widening horizonsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Kendrick School. The source says: For those students who are in Year 5 and are pupil premium, service premium or children in care and live in the school’s designated area and are interested in taking our admission tests, we provide a free familiarisation programme.View the official source.
  • Reading School: in-catchment pupil premium and service premium boys are in Category 1 with an eligible score 5 marks below the usual scoreReading School: Pp priority (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Reading School. The source says: Pupil Premium or Service Premium: who live in the catchment area and are entitled to the Pupil Premium or Service Premium grant. The eligible score for these candidates is 5 marks below the usual eligible score.View the official source. For 2027 entry, the school's documents gave different deadlines for sending this evidence; we are checking which applied.

Our pupil premium and the 11+ guide explains the general rules.

Appeals

This section is general information, not legal advice. Check each school's own appeal guidance and deadlines.

Neither school has published its 2027-entry appeal deadline in a form we could check. Both say that a family refused a place can appeal to an independent panel after National Offer Day (Monday 1 March 2027Reading 2027 entry: National Offer DayChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Kendrick School. The source says: They will be informed by the home LA, [...] on the national offer date, 1 March 2027.View the official source).

  • Reading School: appeals go to an Independent Appeal Panel; for 2026 entry the deadline was 30 March 2026 and hearings are normally in May or JuneReading School: Appeals route (2027)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Reading School. The source says: If your child is not offered a place at the school of your choice, you have a right to appeal against this decision to an Independent Appeal Panel.View the official source. The school publishes its appeal details on its website after National Offer Day.

You can only appeal for a school you applied for, so name it on your form even if your child did not reach the score. Appeals for full grammar schools often do not succeed, so keep a realistic alternative on your list. Our grammar school appeals guide explains the process.

Test changes for 2028 entry
