How places are given

Each area sets its own test

There is no single Berkshire 11+. Each area below has its own tests, dates and admission rules, and its guide gives the checked details.

You apply for school places through your home council, on its Common Application Form (CAF), by its deadline. Name the schools in your real order of preference: councils look at every preference at the same time.

How far offers reached at each school

Listed A to Z, with the furthest distance offers reached in the latest year. Each school uses its own admission rules, so a longer distance does not mean a place is easier to get: distance only counts within the last rule a school reached.

Live near a border?

  • You can apply for schools in another council's area. You still apply through your own home council, on its form.
  • Each area runs its own test, with its own registration and dates. If you like schools in two areas, check both registration deadlines.
  • Schools often give priority to children living nearby or in a catchment area, so check each school's rules before you rely on it.

Which guide do you need?

Slough 11+ guide. The Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools runs one shared test for Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School and Upton Court Grammar School. One registration and one test cover all of them. A child who reaches the consortium's score is eligible to be considered at each school, and each school then offers places by its own rules.

Reading 11+ guide. Reading's grammar schools are Kendrick School for girls and Reading School for boys. Each runs its own test, with its own registration, test day and results. A girl applying to Kendrick sits Kendrick's test; a boy applying to Reading School sits Reading School's.

If you are considering schools in both towns, your child sits each test they need. A result from one test does not count for another.

Planning across both towns

A few things are worth knowing early, ideally in Year 5.

  • The timetables differ. Each test has its own registration window, and some registration closes during Year 5. The Slough dates and Reading dates pages list every step. Our 11+ dates for every area page puts them side by side.
  • Each school has its own admission rules. Catchment areas, priority areas, faith places and pupil premium places all vary from school to school. Some favour children who live close by, so where you live can matter as much as the score. Each school's page sets out its rules.
  • Registering for a test is not applying for a place. Whatever the results, you apply through your home council's Common Application Form by 31 OctoberSchool place applications close (common application form, CAF)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against GOV.UK.The source says: You must apply for a secondary school place by 31 October.View the official source.
