How entry works

Ways in, and how children are assessed

Westminster School takes new pupils at 13+ and 16+. Each way in has its own tests and dates.

  • 13+ entryjoins Fifth Form (Year 9)

How children are assessed: an English paper, a maths paper, an interview, a reference from the current school and the ISEB Common Pre-Test (an online test many independent schools share). Tests are taken in Year 6, with a place offered ahead of entry.

Other ways in: 16+Places, tests and registration for each
  • 16+ entryjoins Sixth Form (Year 12)

    80 places

How children are assessed: an interview, a reference from the current school, GCSE grade requirements, other tasks set by the school and own subject papers.

More about entry from our guide

Westminster has two ways in of its own. Most pupils start in the Fifth Form (Year 9)Westminster School: JoinsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: Every year around 125 children join Westminster School in the Fifth Form (Year 9) at the 13+ entry point.View the official source, and a second group arrives in the Sixth Form (Year 12)Westminster School: JoinsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: Westminster School offers bursary places for pupils entering Year 12 (at the 16+ entry point).View the official source. Families who want a Year 7 start apply to the Under School instead. What catches many parents out is the timing of the 13+: Westminster tests children and decides on places while they are in Year 6Westminster School: Pre test year groupChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: While an applicant is in Year 6 (the academic year of their 11 birthday), they take the Independent Schools Examination Board tests in English, Mathematics and ReasoningView the official source, well before the place begins.

Girls and boys at each entry point

Westminster is moving to co-education, and the school's published descriptions of the school as a whole differ. So we do not give one description for the whole school, and we have asked Westminster to confirm. This is what we could confirm for each entry point:

  • 13+: co-educationalWestminster School: PupilsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: Westminster School accepts boys and girls at 13+ and 16+ entry.View the official source from September 2028 entryWestminster School: Coeducation fromChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: Now, in becoming co-educational, the first girls will enter the School in Year 9 in 2028.View the official source
  • 16+: co-educationalWestminster School: PupilsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: 16+ entry is, therefore, highly sought after by prospective pupils and parents seeking an outstanding independent sixth form for girls and boys.View the official source

11+: the route through Westminster Under School

Westminster School does not take pupils into Year 7 itself. A child who wants to start in Year 7 applies to Westminster Under School. Its 11+ place covers Year 7 (Under School), then Westminster School in Year 9Westminster Under School: JoinsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: They enter the Under School in Year 7 before progressing to Westminster School in Year 9, with no further entry testing.View the official source, and pupils move up without another entrance test. Registration there for September 2028 entryWestminster Under School: Current cycleChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: 11+ Entry for 2028View the official source closes on 30 September 2027Westminster Under School: Registration deadline (2028)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: The first step in the 11+ entry process is for a parent to register their child online from 1 September two years before their intended year of entry; registration for that year will close on 30 September of the following year.View the official source.

The two routes suit different children. A 13+ place starts in Year 9, so a child on that route stays at their current school for Years 7 and 8. If you are unsure which route fits your child, the admissions team can talk it through with you.

It is a computer test shared by many independent schools, with sections on English, maths and reasoning. Westminster adjusts each score for the child's age, so the youngest in the year group are treated fairly. That same term, the school asks each child's current school for a report. Our ISEB Pre-Test guide explains the format.

Stage two. Children who do well are invited to Westminster in January of Year 6 for its own maths and English tests. Westminster writes these itself, so they follow its own style. A separate interview follows in January or February.

The offer. Parents hear by the end of February in Year 6. Westminster makes deferred offers (a place at 13+ offered after assessment at 11)Westminster School: Deferred offerChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Westminster School. The source says: Parents will hear whether their child has been offered a place by the end of February when their child is in Year 6.View the official source, so the place is promised long before the child arrives. Before the child starts, the school asks the current school for a supportive reference in March of Year 8.

The school's published figures for the number of 13+ places differ slightly, so we have left the number out until Westminster confirms it.

A means-tested bursary depends on a family's finances, not on how a child does in the tests. At Westminster, bursaries are measured against day fees, and help towards boarding comes only alongside a King's Scholarship. With no published income cut-off, it is worth asking the bursary team if you are unsure whether you might qualify. Our bursaries guide explains how these checks usually work.
