Before results day: plan for each result

  1. Know how and when results arrive: each area sends its own (Birmingham by 16 October 2026“By” dateBirmingham results dayChecked 9 Oct 2026 against King Edward VI Foundation Birmingham. The source says: | 16th October 2026 | Results |View the official source; Telford and Wrekin by 16 October 2026“By” dateTelford and Wrekin results dayChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Newport Girls' High School. The source says: | Results issues to parents/carers | by Friday 16 October 2026 |View the official source; Walsall no later than 16 October 2026Walsall results dayChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Queen Mary's High School. The source says: 11+ results to be issued to parents/carers no later than Friday 16th October 2026View the official source; Warwickshire 16 October 2026 (on the Parent Portal)Warwickshire results dayChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Warwickshire County Council. The source says: | 16 October 2026 | 11+ results available on Parent Portal |View the official source).
  2. Decide now whether you will read the result on your own first or open it with your child.
  3. Think about your school list for each result: reached the score, close to it, or below it.
  4. Put your own deadlines in your calendar. They are listed below.

On results day

Open it on your own first

  • If you can, read the result on your own first, before your child is home. A few quiet minutes let you take it in and choose your words.
  • You can keep the message unopened until you are ready, or decide to open it together. Do what suits your family.
  • If emails or the council website are slow, it says nothing about your child's result. Wait a little and try again.

How to tell your child

  • Start with how proud you are. I am so proud of how hard you worked for this.
  • Say the result plainly and calmly, in a few words. A big smile at the door can be read as good news before you speak.
  • If they reached the score: You reached the score. We will find out which school in March.
  • If they did not: You did not get the score this time. It was one test on one day, and it does not change how proud we are of you.
  • Let them feel disappointed if they are. You do not need to cheer them up straight away.
  • Let your child decide who else hears their score.

What each result means, and what to do next

There is no single in West Midlands: each area sets its own. Birmingham: 205Birmingham qualifying scoreChecked 9 Oct 2026 against King Edward VI Foundation Birmingham. The source says: The Qualifying Score for all of the Birmingham grammar schools for 2027 entry is 205.View the official source. For the other areas, your results letter or email says whether your child reached the standard.

Your child reached the qualifying score

Your child can be considered for grammar schools in West Midlands. This is not a place yet: if more children apply than a school has places, it uses its own admission rules, such as distance or .

What to do next

  1. Tell your child you are proud of the effort they made, whatever the score.
  2. Read each school's admission rules to see how it gives places. Our school pages show how far offers reached in past years.
  3. Check whether a school asks for its own form or evidence, such as a , and send it by that school's deadline.
  4. Apply to your home council by 31 OctoberSchool place applications close (CAF)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against GOV.UK.The source says: You must apply for a secondary school place by 31 October.View the official source, listing schools in your real order of preference.
  5. Include at least one school your child is likely to be offered, so you have a good choice whatever happens.

Your child was close to the qualifying score

Each area sets its own qualifying score, so read your result against the score for the area where you want a school. A score close to the line can still leave options open, and what they are depends on the area.

What to do next

  1. Tell your child you are proud of the effort they made, whatever the score.
  2. You can still name a grammar school on your application. If it refuses a place, you can after .

  5. If you are refused a place you wanted, you can appeal and ask to join the school's after offers are made.

Your child did not reach the qualifying score this time

Your child has not qualified this time. One test on one day does not measure everything your child can do, and there are good next steps.

What to do next

  1. Tell your child you are proud of the effort they made, whatever the score.
  2. Look again at your other schools, and visit if you can. For most children the right school is one where they will be happy and do well.

Reaching a qualifying score makes a child eligible to be considered. It is not an offer. Offers depend on each school's own admission rules and the number of places.

Before the council deadline

Use the score to shape your council form, not to replace it. List schools in your true order of preference, and include at least one school you would be happy with whatever the score. If your result was shared with more than one area at registration, check each area's rule above. In some areas the qualifying score is set after results arrive, so you may need to apply before you know the final line.

If you are refused a place

After offer day, you can appeal to an independent panel for any school that refuses a place. Each school explains its own appeal route and deadline on its own page. An appeal may not succeed, so a realistic back-up school on your council form matters.

To plan a school list that works for any score, read the West Midlands dates page and the West Midlands 11+ guide.
