More about entry from our guide

St Dunstan's has a Junior School, with a Pre-School, and a Senior School with a Sixth Form. The school has a liberal Christian heritage, but it does not select on faith, and it welcomes families of every faith or none. This year there are five ways in after the Pre-School. Each one has its own form and its own closing date, and they fall in this order: 16+, 13+, 4+, 11+ and then 7+.

11+ (Year 7St Dunstan's College: JoinsChecked 10 Oct 2026 against St Dunstan's College. The source says: Admission at Year 7, (or age "11+") is the most popular entry point to St Dunstan’s College Senior School.View the official source)

The tests come in three steps.

Part one, for every applicant, at the College in December. Children sit computer-based GL Assessment tests in English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. The tests adapt to each child, getting harder or easier as they go. Verbal reasoning works with words and letters; non-verbal reasoning uses shapes and patterns.

Part two, by invitation, in January. This is a morning of real school work:

  • a taught lesson, where staff watch how children approach learning
  • the school's own English paperSt Dunstan's College: Own englishChecked 10 Oct 2026 against St Dunstan's College. The source says: There will be a taught lesson to observe their approach to learning, followed by a written English assessment with comprehension and a persuasive writing task, as well as a mathematics paper assessment.View the official source, with a comprehension and a persuasive writing task
  • the school's own maths paperSt Dunstan's College: Own mathsChecked 10 Oct 2026 against St Dunstan's College. The source says: There will be a taught lesson to observe their approach to learning, followed by a written English assessment with comprehension and a persuasive writing task, as well as a mathematics paper assessment.View the official source

A persuasive writing task asks a child to argue for a point of view, so it helps to be used to giving reasons for an opinion.

Part three, by invitation: the interviewSt Dunstan's College: InterviewChecked 10 Oct 2026 against St Dunstan's College. The source says: Applicants who have been successful in their part 2 assessment are then invited to attend either a general interview, or an academic scholarship interview, based on their assessment results.View the official source. Children who do well in part two are invited to an interview. Depending on their results, this is either a general interview, held in the week shown in the dates table, or an academic scholarship interview on a Saturday in late January.

St Dunstan's calls its means-tested bursaries Wren Scholarships. They are for able children whose families could not otherwise afford the fees. Help can reach the full fee for the highest-scoring candidates. To be considered, a family's gross income must be below the limit above. Wren awards are for Senior School entry: the admissions policy names Year 7 and Year 12, and the Senior School entry page also mentions Year 9. There are no bursaries in the Junior School or for occasional places. An outside firm checks each family's finances. Our bursaries guide explains how that kind of check usually works.
