The FSCE papers explained
By ExamKind Editorial TeamFacts checked 19 October 2026Last reviewed 19 October 2026
In short
FSCE tests are built from named papers, such as Adventure, Beacon, Compass and Discovery, and each school or consortium chooses which ones it uses. Adventure and Beacon cover English and maths, Compass reaches across the primary curriculum, and some schools add a creative writing task. The papers differ in how children answer, so the most useful thing you can do is find your own school's list of papers and read its familiarisation guide.

What is the Adventure paper?
Adventure is an English and maths paper. In Gloucestershire it is multiple choice (see the answer method under Beacon below). Its answer format will feel familiar to children who have seen multiple-choice practice papers, but the content follows the school curriculum rather than reasoning puzzles.
What is the Beacon paper?
Beacon also covers English and maths, but children write their own short answers instead of choosing from options. In Gloucestershire, the answer method is: Adventure/Compass: shade one oval; Beacon: one number or capital letter per boxGloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test (FSCE: Adventure, Beacon, Compass): Answer entryChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Sir Thomas Rich's School. The source says: Short Written Answers (Beacon Paper) For questions with number answers, you will need to write only ONE number in each box, like this example: For questions with letter answers, you will need to write only ONE letter in each box.
View the official source. For many children this is the biggest change from a multiple-choice test. Neat, exact answers matter, so it helps to practise putting one number or letter in each box.
What is the Compass paper?
Compass reaches beyond English and maths into subjects from across the primary curriculum; Gloucestershire's list of subjects is in the table above. It is multiple choice. Across Gloucestershire's whole test, though: Maths and English form the main part; foundation subjects also assessedGloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test (FSCE: Adventure, Beacon, Compass): Main subjectsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Pate's Grammar School (Gloucestershire). The source says: Maths and English form the main part of the assessment, so preparation can focus on developing the maths skills they are learning in school
View the official source. Because Compass can draw on so many subjects, the preparation that is likely to help most is a broad, curious approach to school learning rather than practising one type of question.
What is the Discovery paper?
Discovery is one of the four papers in Reading School's FSCE test. Reading describes the test's content as Key Stage 2 up to and including the Year 5 programme of study; plus thinking like an author, problem solving and thinking creativelyReading School entrance test (FSCE): Curriculum basisChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Reading School. The source says: Children are expected to show ability appropriate to the Key Stage 2 curriculum, up to and including the Year 5 programme of study. Children who usually work in pencil may want to try a few pieces of work in pen beforehand, so that the change feels normal on the day. In each case the scored papers are age-standardised (Chelmsford's Creativity task is judged separately). This is meant to make sure younger children in the year group are not at a disadvantage because of their age. Our guide to age standardisation explains how this works.
How can you prepare for the papers calmly?
- Find your school's paper list first. Do not assume another school's FSCE test is the same as yours.
- Read the familiarisation guide together. It shows the layout and how to record answers, which matters most for Beacon-style written answers.
- Keep Year 5 English and maths secure. That is what Adventure and Beacon draw on.
- Keep curiosity broad for Compass: reading widely, asking questions and noticing maths in everyday life all help.
- Practise short written answers that answer exactly what was asked.
