FSCE past papers: why there are none

By ExamKind Editorial TeamFacts checked 19 October 2026Last reviewed 19 October 2026

In short

There are no FSCE past papers to buy or download. FSCE says its content changes every year, and its schools publish free familiarisation guides instead, which show the style of the questions and how to record answers. Because FSCE tests follow the primary school curriculum, the most useful preparation is secure everyday learning in English and maths, wide reading and some practice with the answer format, not stacks of practice papers.

Does FSCE publish past papers?

No. FSCE says there are no past papers; the content changes every yearFSCE: past papersChecked 9 Oct 2026 against FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise). The source says: FSCE does not issue past papers and our test content changes every year;View the official source. The Gloucestershire schools give the same answer to the question "Does the content change every year?": YesGloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test (FSCE: Adventure, Beacon, Compass): Content varies yearlyChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Sir Thomas Rich's School. The source says: The Entrance Test content changes each year therefore the Familiarisation Guide is NOT definitive and the inclusion of any question types does NOT guarantee that they will be found in the actual test.View the official source.

Reading School, which also uses FSCE, adds that there are no commercially available practice test papers for FSCE testsFSCE: Reading schoolChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Reading School. The source says: Please note: there are no commercially available practice test papers for the FSCE Ltd tests.View the official source.

What about books and papers sold as "FSCE practice"?

You may see commercial books or online packs described as FSCE-style. The Gloucestershire schools are clear that no commercial 11+ books or past papers are endorsed by FSCEGloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test (FSCE: Adventure, Beacon, Compass): Practice materials soldChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Sir Thomas Rich's School. The source says: There are NO commercial 11+ books or past papers endorsed by FSCE.View the official source. That does not mean such material is useless, but it is someone's guess at the style, not FSCE's own work. If you use it, treat it as general English and maths practice, and check anything that looks unfamiliar against your school's official familiarisation guide.

GL works differently. For GL tests there are free familiarisation papers to print; practice papers cost moneyGL Assessment: free practice materialChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School. The source says: While familiarisation papers are freely available for download, practice papers are only accessible for purchase.View the official source.

What official material is there instead?

Each FSCE school publishes its own familiarisation material. These are the arrangements the schools describe:

School or areaOfficial material
Gloucestershire grammar schoolsfamiliarisation materials on every Gloucestershire grammar school website from the end of September (2026)Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test (FSCE: Adventure, Beacon, Compass): Familiarisation materialsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Pate's Grammar School (Gloucestershire). The source says: All grammar schools in Gloucestershire will provide familiarisation materials on their websites from the end of September.View the official source
Reading Schoolfamiliarisation guides for children and parents; no practice or past papersReading School entrance test (FSCE): Familiarisation materialsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Reading School. The source says: Please note: there are no commercially available practice test papers for the FSCE Ltd tests.View the official source
Chelmsford County High School for GirlsFree FSCE Familiarisation Guides (children / parents) on the school website; no past or practice papersCCHS entrance test (FSCE): Familiarisation materialsChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Chelmsford County High School for Girls. The source says: There are no ‘practice papers’, but a familiarisation paper will be made available on our website.View the official source

Familiarisation material shows the layout, the instructions and the way answers are recorded. It is not a test to score. Going through it calmly once or twice can help a child know what to expect on the day.

Some areas offer extra support for some children. In Gloucestershire, for example, the grammar schools run a Shaping Futures programme (with a partner online platform) at all seven grammar schools for able Pupil Premium pupils in Years 4 and 5; free partner-platform familiarisation for PP-eligible children.Gloucestershire: Support programmeChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Sir Thomas Rich's School. The source says: The Shaping Futures Programme is run at all seven Gloucestershire grammar schools to enable us to offer this opportunity to all Pupil Premium students in our community.View the official source. Ask your school what is available.

Why does FSCE work this way?

FSCE tests are based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum up to the end of Year 5FSCE: what the tests coverChecked 9 Oct 2026 against FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise). The source says: Content from the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum taught in primary schools up toView the official source, so the content is the work children already do at school. The Gloucestershire schools say they chose this kind of test for tests drawing on Key Stage 2 content, accessible to children from any primary school and reducing reliance on specialist tutoringGloucestershire: Change rationaleChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Pate's Grammar School (Gloucestershire). The source says: FSCE’s approach draws heavily on Key Stage 2 curriculum content, ensuring accessibility for children from a wide range of primary schools and reducing reliance on specialist 11+ tutoring.View the official source.

FSCE's own view is that children do not need a tutor, and its website and familiarisation guides give all the information neededFSCE: what it says about tutoringChecked 9 Oct 2026 against FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise). The source says: All the information you and your child will need can be found on this website and in our Familiarisation Guides.View the official source. How can you prepare without past papers?

  1. Find out which papers your school uses. FSCE tests differ from school to school. Our page on the FSCE papers lists them.
  2. Read the familiarisation guide together, early on, so the format is not a surprise.
  3. Make Year 5 English and maths secure. The work your child does at school, homework and reading are directly relevant.
  4. Practise short written answers. Some FSCE papers ask children to write their own answer rather than choose one. Practise answering exactly what is asked, neatly, in the right place.
  5. Keep curiosity broad. For papers that range across the curriculum, the Gloucestershire schools suggest activities such as visiting museums, exploring new genres of books and applying maths to everyday lifeFSCE: Glos prep adviceChecked 9 Oct 2026 against Pate's Grammar School (Gloucestershire). The source says: To support this, activities such as visiting museums, exploring new genres of books, and applying mathematical learning to everyday life can all be valuable ways to prepare.View the official source.
  6. Keep it short and regular. Short, regular sessions are usually easier for children to manage than long ones. Our guide on how much practice is enough has more on pacing.

If you are thinking about whether to pay for help, our guides to preparing without a tutor and the 11+ on a budget may help.
