How places are given
Northern Ireland grammar schools give Year 8 places using their own admissions criteria, often in order of transfer test result. Belfast Royal Academy's criteria are under Admission rules on this page.
Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.
Reaching the school's standard means your child can be considered. If more children qualify than there are places, the school gives places using its admission rules, in order. The figures below show how far those rules reached in past years. They are history, not a prediction: they change every year with who applies.
Most Northern Ireland schools do not publish how far places reached. Read the school's admissions criteria to see how it ranks applicants, and what transfer test results mean.

Score order first
One rule sat above everything: children normally living in Northern Ireland came first. View the official source No minimum score was set. The Academy also said it would not look at where it appeared in your list of preferences.
When scores are equal
Siblings, free school meals and the prep department did not win places on their own. They only mattered when several children had the same TSAS and there were not enough places left for all of them. The order was the prep department first, then a brother or sister in the senior school, then free school meals, then the child's age, then surname, and finally a computer draw.

Two points often cause confusion. There was no set quota of places for children entitled to free school meals; it was a tie-break only. And the age rule is not an eldest-child rule. It compares the ages of the tied children themselves, oldest first, using birth certificates. Whether your child is the eldest in your family made no difference.
Special circumstances and missing results
If illness or a serious problem affected your child on a test day, the claim goes to the school, not to SEAG. Illness on a test day is taken into account by the post-primary school through a 'special circumstances' claim with documentary evidence, made with the EA transfer application; not by SEAG or in marking.Northern Ireland: Special circumstances routeChecked 9 Oct 2026 against SEAG (Schools' Entrance Assessment Group). The source says: Academically selective post-primary schools include, within their Year 8 Admissions Criteria, something which is usually referred to as “Special Circumstances”. This allows a parent, when making their post primary transfer application to, for example, ask the post-primary school to take account of their child being unwell when sitting one of the Entrance Assessment Papers.
View the official source The Academy's own process: Special Cases procedure: Special Circumstances claims (medical or other problems affecting performance; candidates who sat both papers and have a TSAS) considered in three stages by a Special Cases panel, which may adjust the TSAS. Parents must complete the SC Form and consult the Special Circumstances Guide (stated to be on the school website, but not found on the admissions, publications or policies pages).Belfast Royal Academy: Special circumstances (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Belfast Royal Academy. The source says: Claims for Special Circumstances will be considered by the School where medical or other problems may have affected performance in the Entrance Assessment and applies to candidates who have sat both Entrance Assessment papers and have received a TSAS. Parents/Guardians should refer to the Special Circumstances Guide for Parents/Guardians and complete the SC Form (both documents are available from the School website). The SC Form must be completed for a Special Circumstances claim to be considered.

A child with no TSAS, or with only one paper sat, was handled differently.
