How places are given

Northern Ireland grammar schools give Year 8 places using their own admissions criteria, often in order of transfer test result. Carrickfergus Grammar School's criteria are under Admission rules on this page.

Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.

Reaching the school's standard means your child can be considered. If more children qualify than there are places, the school gives places using its admission rules, in order. The figures below show how far those rules reached in past years. They are history, not a prediction: they change every year with who applies.

Checked, source: Department for Education (GOV.UK), checked

Most Northern Ireland schools do not publish how far places reached. Read the school's admissions criteria to see how it ranks applicants, and what transfer test results mean.

Put simply, the score ranking fills the places. The sub-criteria after it work as tie-breaks for children level on score at the cut-off. The criteria do not spell that out word for word, but it is how the order reads.

Brother or sister at the school. Another child of the family currently enrolled at the school at the date of application (name and Registration Group on the Transfer Application). 'Child of the family' includes step/half siblings, adopted or fostered children and e.g. an orphaned cousin brought up with the family.Carrickfergus Grammar School: Sibling criterion (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Carrickfergus Grammar School. The source says: I. Eldest child. Sub-criterion II: eldest eligible child of the family (includes children more than seven years younger than the next sibling, eldest of a reconstituted family, first to transfer to mainstream post-primary because an elder sibling is statemented/in a special school, families relocated to NI; twins/multiples joint eldest). Contributory primary schools. A child at one of the listed primaries counts here. So does a child whose own school is closer to Carrickfergus Grammar, measured in a straight line, than any listed primary. The list is in the table below.

Children without a SEAG score. If places remain after all children with a SEAG TSAS (or assigned score) are considered, children who have not taken the SEAG Entrance Assessment and satisfy criterion 1.1 (NI residence) are allocated remaining places using sub-criteria 1.3. Special Provisions (transfer from outside NI, more than half of primary education outside NI, unable to sit/one paper only, religious observance) lead to an independent assessment and an assigned TSAS.Carrickfergus Grammar School: Applicants without result (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against Carrickfergus Grammar School. The source says: the School will consider for admission any children who have not taken the SEAG Entrance Assessment. Without a place here, your child's application carries on to the next school on your form. The governors judge each case on the transfer application alone, so put the sibling's name and registration group, and the eldest-child verifier letter, on it if they apply.

If you think the criteria were misapplied, the route is the AT1 form, via the EA websiteNorthern Ireland: FormChecked 9 Oct 2026 against nidirect (NI Government). The source says: To appeal a school's decision that has refused your child a place, go to the EA website where you can send the appeal form (AT1 Form).View the official source.
