How places are given

Northern Ireland grammar schools give Year 8 places using their own admissions criteria, often in order of transfer test result. St. Colman’s College, Newry's criteria are under Admission rules on this page.

Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.

Reaching the school's standard means your child can be considered. If more children qualify than there are places, the school gives places using its admission rules, in order. The figures below show how far those rules reached in past years. They are history, not a prediction: they change every year with who applies.

Checked, source: Department for Education (GOV.UK), checked

Most Northern Ireland schools do not publish how far places reached. Read the school's admissions criteria to see how it ranks applicants, and what transfer test results mean.

More detail from our guide

Here is what the college's Year 8 page says: Admissions are managed by the Education Authority Transfer Office based on criteria set by the College; the school refers parents to the EA Post-Primary Admissions Guide for criteria information and links the SC/SP guides and forms.St. Colman’s College, Newry: Transfer application adviceChecked 9 Oct 2026 against St Colman's College. The source says: Pupils are admitted in adherence with our Admissions Criteria and the application process administered by the Transfer Office at the Education Authority. The college's own page does not set the rules out in full, and the EA guide it points to stopped our checking tools with a security check. So we cannot yet list the admissions number, the order of criteria or the tie-break. We are asking for a manual capture and will update this page.

The Year 8 page already offers help with special circumstances: Year 8 page offers 'Claiming Special Circumstances' and 'Claiming Special Provision' guides (SEAG 2025-26) and editable SC/SP forms; school-specific procedure not published.St. Colman’s College, Newry: Special circumstances (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Colman's College. The source says: ### Special Circumstances/Special Provision Special Circumstances/Special Provision Claiming Special Circumstances Claiming Special Provision SP Form Editable SC Form EditableView the official source Fresh versions for this year's cycle are likely to follow.

St Colman's does not run a separate exam. Children who want a SEAG result for their application sit the SEAG papers in November, and the college then applies its own criteria to the outcomes. Those criteria decide whether the exact score or the band matters more, and we have not yet seen them. Our SEAG transfer test guide and results explained set out the scale and the bands.
