More about entry from our guide

SCHS is one of the schools of the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST). It is an all-through girls' school on two sites in south London. The Prep School, with its Nursery, has its own site, apart from the Senior School on Abbotswood Road. New girls can join at four set points. Each has its own form and closing date, and the Sixth Form round is the first to close this autumn.

11+ (Year 7Streatham & Clapham High School: JoinsChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: The principal point of entry into the Senior school is Year 7 (11+) and occasionally Year 9 (13+).View the official source)

Year 7 is the main way into the Senior School. The 11+ for September 2027 entryStreatham & Clapham High School: Current cycleChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Applications are now open for Year 7 entry in September 2027.View the official source has three parts, and none is a sit-down interview. The school prefers to watch girls take part in a shared task. It feels this shows more of a child than a formal talk across a desk.

At the school, in mid-November:

  • group activityStreatham & Clapham High School: Group activityChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: The process encompasses an interactive group observation activity and creative writing task, as well as the ISEB online assessments.View the official source
  • the school's own creative writing taskStreatham & Clapham High School: Own creative writingChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: This theme is then further developed in the 25-minute creative writing task that they complete on the same day.View the official source

The group activity is a hands-on problem to solve together, built around a theme. Staff look at how each girl thinks a problem through and how she works with others. Later that day, girls write a short, timed creative piece that picks up the same theme.

Before the deadline in early December:

  • ISEB Common Pre-TestStreatham & Clapham High School: Iseb pretestChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: All applicants are expected to sit the ISEB assessment, which is an online adaptive test covering Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.View the official source

The ISEB Common Pre-Test is an online test that many independent schools share. It has sections on English, maths, verbal reasoning (word puzzles) and non-verbal reasoning (shape and pattern puzzles). It adapts as a child goes, so the questions get easier or harder in response to her answers. The school would like girls to take it at their own primary or prep school if they can. If not, she can sit it at another test centre, or at SCHS on a Saturday in December. Read more in our ISEB Common Pre-Test guide.

The school also asks for a reference from the current schoolStreatham & Clapham High School: ReferenceChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: School references are required alongside admissions assessments to help us form a holistic view of whether a pupil is likely to thrive at SCHS.View the official source. After you register, SCHS asks your daughter's school for this, so it helps to tell her teachers about your plans early. The Head also reads her end of Year 5 report when deciding on offers.

Offers are sent in February 2027Streatham & Clapham High School: Offer date (2027)Checked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Offers Sent: Early February 2027View the official source, and the deadline to accept is midday on 3 March 2027Streatham & Clapham High School: Acceptance deadline (2027)Checked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Offer Acceptance Deadline: 12 noon on Tuesday 3 March 2027View the official source.

At 11+, academic scholarships are decided from the entrance assessments. Specialist scholarships in art, design technology, drama, music and sport need their own form. The school's published information differs on when that form is due, and we have asked it to confirm. If your daughter hopes to apply for one, check the date with the admissions team and send the form early.

Year 9 and other years

Year 9 is not a regular entry point. Now and then a place becomes free. When that happens, the girl sits the school's own English paperStreatham & Clapham High School: Own englishChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Where places are available, entry will be based on assessments in English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as an interview with our Head.View the official source, the school's own maths paperStreatham & Clapham High School: Own mathsChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Where places are available, entry will be based on assessments in English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as an interview with our Head.View the official source and the school's own science paperStreatham & Clapham High School: Own scienceChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Where places are available, entry will be based on assessments in English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as an interview with our Head.View the official source, and has an interviewStreatham & Clapham High School: InterviewChecked 10 Oct 2026 against Streatham & Clapham High School. The source says: Where places are available, entry will be based on assessments in English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as an interview with our Head.View the official source with the Head. Every applicant also sits a critical thinking paper, which the school treats as its entrance exam. A paper like this asks students to weigh up arguments and spot weak reasoning, rather than recall facts. The interview is a formal one with the Director of Sixth Form. The school asks for a set number of good GCSE passes, including English and maths, with higher grades in the subjects she plans to study at A level. Students applying for an academic scholarship sit one more paper, in a subject they choose. Bursaries are only for girls joining in Year 7 or Year 12. The GDST, not the school itself, assesses every bursary application. It looks at a family's income and assets as a whole. The income guide is a ceiling, not a typical figure: the school says a family earning more than this is very unlikely to receive a bursary. It also says most of its larger awards go to families on far lower incomes, who own no assets apart from their home. Even so, if you are unsure, it costs nothing to ask. Our bursaries guide walks through the usual steps.

A scholarship rewards a talent, while a bursary depends on need, so a family that needs help with fees should apply for a bursary too.
