How places are given
Northern Ireland grammar schools give Year 8 places using their own admissions criteria, often in order of transfer test result. St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel's criteria are under Admission rules on this page.
Qualifying is not the same as being offered a place.
Reaching the school's standard means your child can be considered. If more children qualify than there are places, the school gives places using its admission rules, in order. The figures below show how far those rules reached in past years. They are history, not a prediction: they change every year with who applies.
Most Northern Ireland schools do not publish how far places reached. Read the school's admissions criteria to see how it ranks applicants, and what transfer test results mean.

Places were given in three stages.
Stage One: local children who put St Louis first
The first stage was for children who live in, or go to primary school in, the local area of Lower and Upper Mourne, and who named St Louis as first preference. The area follows parish boundaries. There are no named feeder primary schools. If more children qualified than there were places, the family criteria below decided.
Stage Two: the SEAG band places
A fixed share of places went to first-preference applicants by SEAG band. Stage Two: Band 1 first, criteria 1-8 if oversubscribed; then Bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in turn with criteria 1-8.St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel: Selection metric (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Louis Grammar School Kilkeel. The source says: Places will be allocated to pupils placed in Band 1 of the SEAG Entrance Assessment. Stage Three: anything left
Unfilled places went to other first-preference applicants, using a similar list of family criteria. Only after that were children who had put St Louis lower down considered.
The family criteria
Stages One and Two used the same list, in this order:

Two things stand out. Children of staff and of former pupils get priority here. And the date-of-birth rule favours the youngest child, the opposite of the eldest-first rule some schools use.
Special circumstances
These apply only to children trying for a Stage Two place. Applies to Stage Two applicants: Form SC with independent verifiable evidence uploaded with the Transfer Application; KS2 standardised English/Maths results verified by the primary principal; Board may adjust the band.St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel: Special circumstances (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Louis Grammar School Kilkeel. The source says: Any Parent/Guardian claiming Special Circumstances must complete the documentation in the Claiming Special Circumstances Pack available from St Louis Grammar School or from its website. This documentation known as Form SC, together with the independent verifiable documentary evidence which corroborates the Special Circumstances claim, must be uploaded with the Transfer Application.
View the official source The claim is made with the transfer application, as for every SEAG school: Illness on a test day is taken into account by the post-primary school through a 'special circumstances' claim with documentary evidence, made with the EA transfer application; not by SEAG or in marking.Northern Ireland: Special circumstances routeChecked 9 Oct 2026 against SEAG (Schools' Entrance Assessment Group). The source says: Academically selective post-primary schools include, within their Year 8 Admissions Criteria, something which is usually referred to as “Special Circumstances”. This allows a parent, when making their post primary transfer application to, for example, ask the post-primary school to take account of their child being unwell when sitting one of the Entrance Assessment Papers.

How many apply
The school publishes applications and admissions for recent years (year, admissions number, applications, admissions):

In each year shown, applications were below the admissions number. That can change, so it is not a reason to skip the criteria.

What makes St Louis different is how little of the intake depends on the result. The school's own summary for 2026 entry: 40% of places (52 of 130) at Stage Two are allocated by SEAG band to first-preference applicants; Stage One (local area, first preference) and Stage Three use non-academic criteria.St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel: Academic selection (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Louis Grammar School Kilkeel. The source says: A total of 52 students out of 130 are selected on the basis of academic ability or 40% of our annual (Stage 2) intake.

Where it does use the result, St Louis looks at the band, not the exact TSAS. So should your child sit? If you live in the local area and will put St Louis first, the test is not needed for the first stage. It may still help at the second stage, and for other schools on your list. A child without a SEAG result can still be placed at Stage One (local Mourne first-preference applicants) or Stage Three (leftover places), which do not use SEAG. Only the 52 Stage Two places use SEAG bands; Special Provision (SP Form) covers Stage Two applicants who could not sit it.St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel: Applicants without result (2026)Checked 9 Oct 2026 against St Louis Grammar School Kilkeel. The source says: was EITHER unable to sit the SEAG Entrance Assessment OR has an estimated outcome because they only sat one of the two Entrance Assessment papers. Applications will be considered at Stage Three in the event that residual places remain unfilled.
