More about entry from our guide

SPGS admits at two points: the start of the Lower School in Year 7, and the Senior School in Year 12. At both, entry happens in stages. A first test is followed by written papers, and applicants who do well are then asked in to interview. At 11+, girls move to each new stage by invitation, so families hear how things are going along the way.

Stage one: the ISEB Common Pre-Test. This is a timed test on a computer, with verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal reasoning sections. It adjusts to how each child is doing. Girls can sit it at an approved ISEB centre, at their own school if it is a centre, or at SPGS on set days in November. Our ISEB Pre-Test guide describes the sections.

  • English: a close reading of a passage of literary writing, with a short set of questions on it. There is no separate creative writing task, but the last question gives room for some imaginative writing.
  • Maths: two sections. The first checks basic arithmetic and then moves to problem solving. The second has longer questions in several parts. Topics come from the National Curriculum up to Key Stage 2.
  • General Comprehension: a paper built around one theme. Girls look at pictures, numbers or text, draw conclusions, spot patterns and reason things through. It does not test facts learned in advance.

If you would like sample material, ask the school or check its 11+ page.
