City has just two main ways in. Most girls arrive in Year 7 after the 11+, and others join the sixth form after the 16+ process. There is no junior school, so there is no 4+ or 7+ entry. Both routes start with a reasoning-style test, and both end with an interview for the girls the school wants to get to know better.

This is a test from Cambridge, the exam group, and the school's policy says it looks at numerical, verbal and non-verbal skills. Put simply, it asks a child to spot patterns and solve short problems with words, numbers and shapes. It is less about what she has been taught and more about how she thinks.

Stage two. On that day they sit two short written papers that City sets itself, one in English and one in maths. An interview at this age is a chat with a teacher about a girl's interests and ideas. Interviewers tend to look for curiosity more than polished answers.

The school also asks the head of a girl's current school for a reference. To help girls know what to expect, City provides familiarisation material for the computer test plus a sample English paper and a sample maths paper. You can find these through its admissions pages.

All applicants sit the reasoning paper, which mixes critical thinking with verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Depending on the A levels a girl hopes to take, she may also sit a maths paper, an essay paper or both. The school also looks at savings and other assets, and it says families above the guide figure are unlikely to qualify. Bursaries are not open to overseas applicants. When we checked, City's open events page showed no upcoming 11+ or 16+ events. The school lists visits on its website and adds new dates as they are set, so it is worth checking back. Visiting is a good way to see the building and get a feel for the journey into the City each day.
